Hey all! Its been a while since I’ve written, but I seem to be saying that a lot. I’ve had some complaints from a certain Grandma in Florida, so I better get writing!! It is all going very well here—with some rocky transitions in life all seems to be coming together. Yesterday I began my job at the Korea Times as a copy editor. What is a copy editor? I wasn’t quite sure either, but it turn out we read the articles in the paper before they come out, and check them for errors. So far so good, while it’s a bit boring at times when those articles on tax increase come in, I think I’m going to like it.
So, I’m working here in the pulsing heart of the city from 10:30 till 5:30, then jumping on the subway to get across the mighty Han river to my teaching job at 6:45… I stay there until about 9 or 10 everyday except on Fridays… I was worried about how busy I will be, but the copy editing job takes very little physical energy, just clicking and occasionally typing… So I think I will enjoy being a workaholic for a little while.
Things have changed very dramatically and rapidly in the past year--- To think where I was a year ago, just starting out in Ilsan teaching at my old hagwon, afraid to ride on the subway and order noodles its hard to believe what has happened since then, and how far I’ve come.
I am on my 3rd job and 3rd apartment already, but I see that its been a necessary evolution, not getting stuck in one place but continuing to go after what’s interesting and not stagnating in situations has been important. I think I could not have done it without my free mental health plan, going to Hwa Gye Sa every weekend to walk in a circle peacefully… amazingly transformitive I think it has been. I miss my family, but I am lucky to have found some good friends here.
Here’s a bad Haiku
11:18, on the 6th floor
the whole city buzzes around us
waiting for spring to come
